EU official looking for steps toward climate treaty in Washington meetings

By The Associated Press

WASHINGTON: The European Union's environment commissioner says he hopes to see steps by the Bush administration toward a global climate change treaty before its term expires in January.

Stavros Dimas also says he is encouraged that the three remaining major U.S. candidates for president support establishing carbon trading in the United States to reduce emissions.

Dimas is in Washington for the EU-U.S. High-Level Dialogue on climate change, clean energy and sustainable development.

He says that the Bush administration must take steps in negotiating a United Nations' climate change treaty now to join other nations in meeting an agreed 2009 deadline.

He says it is very important "to achieve with this administration as much as we can."
