RESEARCH PROGRAM MANAGER
The Edmonton Waste Management Centre of Excellence (EWMCE) is a not-for-profit organization with a mandate to promote research, technology development and training to increase scientific and applied knowledge in all areas of waste management. We assist researchers and innovators with practical and academic expertise, plus access to a wide range of facilities, for the reduction and reuse of waste and waste water. Our employees share a common philosophy that research into waste management contributes to environmental sustainability and better quality of life. The Centre operates from two facilities: the Goldbar Wastewater Research and Training Centre (WRTC) and the Cover Bar Solid Waste Research and Development Facility.
Reporting to the Executive Manager and working closely with the managers of the other program areas, the Research Program Manager will be part of the Centre’s executive management team.
Key responsibilities of the position include:
• Overall management of EWMCE’s research activities
• Coordination and administration of the EWMCE’s Research Committee
• Establishment and regular review of the EWMCE’s research priorities
• Development of new partnerships and enhancing existing relationships with companies, funding agencies and research institutions to advance the EWMCE’s research program,
• Identification and funding opportunities and preparation of research proposals and grant applications with project partners
• Development, implementation and regular review of all policies and procedures related to the research program, including initiation, approval, and quality control and quality assurance of research projects
• Working closely with researchers, graduate students, and support staff of the EWMCE and its partners to ensure successful completion of projects
• Dissemination of research results through presentations and publications
• Playing a key role in marketing of EWMCE’s current and future research activities to the Centre’s regional and international markets
• Cooperating with the EWMCE’s Marketing Coordinator on the development of research program-related content for promotional material, including website
• Development and implementation of annual budget for the research program
• Hiring and supervision of support staff for the research program
• Establishment and administration of a general research fund
You have an advanced degree, preferably PhD, in a relevant discipline and a minimum of 3 years of successful work experience in a research environment, a track record in grant application and project management and a strong interest in working in the environmental field, managerial and/or consulting experience are an advantage, familiarity with applied research in and industrial setting is desirable.
You are self-motivated, highly organized and flexible with the ability to work in a dynamic environment, with excellent written and verbal communication skills and effective interpersonal and teamwork skills. You will also possess strong problem-solving skills, are able to multi-task in a dynamic work environment and able to relate to the overall concept of the EWMCE.
It is a renewable 3-year contract position. Salary is negotiable and depends on qualifications and experience. You possess a valid Class 5 Alberta Driver’s License and personal vehicle and are willing to undertake some local, national, and international travel.
